Lipstick Layering 101: How to Layer Like a Pro

When it comes to makeup, we usually embrace the less-is-more approach. However, there are certain instances we make an exception for – like lipstick layering. Layering lipstick has become one of the makeup industry’s most popular trends, mostly because it allows you to create three or more custom shades with as little as two lipsticks. With just a little creativity, you can design new shades that are completely unique to you! Now we’re going to teach you how to use Perricone MD No Makeup Lipsticks to create custom shades that are natural-looking and totally wearable.

Here’s everything you need to know to layer lipstick like a pro, plus a few pretty layered looks to try from Rosalba Martone, Perricone MD’s Director of Education.

Why Perricone MD No Makeup Lipsticks Are Perfect for Layering

The new and improved Perricone MD lipsticks come in a complementary color palette (in addition to the Original Pink shade, there is now Berry, Cognac, Wine, Red, and Rose). Because the colors all work so well together, they are exceptionally easy to layer. The solid-to-serum, balm-like texture, helps the layered colors blend together and prevents caking (caking can often occur when layering thick, matte lipsticks) – yet just another reason the No Makeup Lipsticks are perfect for layering. Finally, the lipsticks are lightweight and buildable, and have a light reflecting sheen, which enhances your lip color and shape. So even though you are layering on lipstick, the overall look will still be sheer and natural.

Lip Tips

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to lipstick layering, but these application techniques can help get you started. First, pat No Makeup Concealer around your lips to minimize redness near your mouth. This will make your layered lipstick look really pop, and prevent the lip color from picking up any redness in your skin. Then swipe or dab on lipsticks to create your custom shade. “You simply dab on the lipstick to add a bit of color, or swipe it on for more saturated hue,” says Martone. For example, you can swipe a darker color on the bottom, and dab a lighter shade on top to soften the look. Once you’ve layered on your lipstick, dab the No Makeup Highlighter across your cupid’s bow to make your pout look a little plumper. It reflects the light, giving the illusion of more shape and fullness. If you want to add a little extra shine, you can swipe a coat of lip gloss over your lipstick combo.
